FAQ's
What is a home Connect group?
A home Connect group is where Skyliner’s have come together with the goal of getting to know each other in relationship and grow in Christ together. They usually meet weekly in a home setting of about 5-12 people.
Why should I join a home Connect group?
In a large church it is easy to feel disconnected. Home Connect groups can make a large church feel small because you get to know other people in real relationship and community. They also can be a place where you have others to walk along side you when you are going through difficult times in your life.
How often do the groups meet?
Most groups meet once a week, but some are twice a month or even once a month. You can contact the leader of the group to find out how often they meet.
What happens at a home Connect group?
Each group leader chooses study material that they will follow. These studies usually last anywhere from 4-13 weeks, and then a new study is started. The studies in themselves are not the most important aspect of the group. The group goals are connecting with each other, with Christ and others they serve. Groups will spend time in getting to know each other through prayer, support and serving others outside the group.
How long do the meetings last?
Most meetings last 1 ½ - 2 hours.
How do I find out more information about a particular group?
You can contact the home Connect Pastors about any group, or the home Connect leader of each group. The leaders can tell you what they are currently studying and answer your specific questions about their group.
How does it differ from other groups at Skyline?
There are many different Connect groups to choose from at Skyline. All the Connect groups are there for you to grow in relationship with other Skyliner’s and Christ. Home Connect groups meet in homes throughout the city during the week. Church Connect groups meet at the Church usually during the weekend services. Rec groups focus on a common recreational activity, and Health groups are support groups for various stages in life.
Will I get in-depth Bible study there?
All the groups are doing Bible study, but they are not designed to be in-depth studies. Groups will do studies directly from the Bible, or from books or DVD series they choose, or discussions from the sermons preached on the weekend.
How do I find a group that is right for me?
We suggest you go to “Join a group” and answer the questions about yourself. This questionnaire will be sent to the home Connect Pastors who will take your information and get back to you on their suggestion of the group that might be your best fit. You can also contact Pastors Bob and Jan directly at Hughes@skyolinechurch.org i or visit the Connect Center on the weekends to pick up a home Connect booklet and get more information.
How do I get into a group?
Once you have decided that you would like to visit a group it would be best if you gave the leader a phone call or email and confirmed that they are meeting that week and their exact meeting location. Then all you have to do is just drop in and introduce yourself. The groups love to have new visitors and they will welcome you.
What if I don’t like the first group I try?
This is not a problem. You can contact the home Connect Pastors and ask for a second or third suggestion of a group to try. You are never obligated to have to stay with any group that you visit. You can visit as many as you want before deciding which group is best for you.
Do you have to be a member of Skyline to attend a group?
No, you do not need to be a member of Skyline to attend a Skyline home Connect group. However, if Skyline is not your church home and you attend another church for your regular worship we would encourage you to get involved within small groups within your church if they are offered.
What types of groups are offered?
There are many different types of home Connect groups. They can be grouped by age, married couples or singles, men or women, or groups that just are open to anyone.
Is childcare offered at the groups?
Most of the groups do not offer childcare. It is always best if you can provide your own childcare. However, this is not always feasible, and we do have a few groups that are open to the entire family. Call the leader of a Family group to find out what age children attend and what arrangements they have made within the group to watch over the children.
Is there any expensive I will have to incur?
Group members purchase the book or study guide that is needed for each series. These costs might range from $8-15 for a study.
Do I need to make a long term commitment to a group?
No, we do ask that you try and commit to staying through one series of study which can last from 4-13 weeks. However, you will benefit the most from home Connect groups if you stay with the groups longer because with time relationships are built stronger. Some people have been with their groups for many years, so the choice is up to you.
Why do some groups call themselves “closed”?
When a group calls itself closed it is not because they do not want new members, but rather they have reached the capacity of their host home. When groups grow to where either there is no more room within the host home or they are too large for good discussion the group will label themselves “closed” until the situation has changed.
What if I want to start my own group?
If you are interested in starting your group please contact the home Connect Pastors to schedule a time to get together and talk about your thoughts. The home Connect Pastors provide training for anyone interested in leading a group.
